Devotions: Verse of the Year & Month

Our verses for the year, along with our monthly verses are here to provide you with scripture to focus and mediate on. “Your word is a lamp to my feet,” says the psalmist, “and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105) and we receive direction throughout scripture to mediate on God’s word as it provides nourishment for our Spiritual life, wisdom and direction. It draws us near to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It opens our heart to allow the Holy Spirit to guide our life into the center of God’s will. It honors God, by placing Him as our priority.

Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Psalm 77:12 I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.

Psalm 119:115 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.

Verse for the Year

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”

Please take a moment and reflect on what Jesus is telling us. He is speaking in the context of our faith, trusting God in every area of our life and knowing if we seek His will that there are abundant blessings in store for us.

Post this verse somewhere that you can see it, read it, meditate on it and own it every day this year. Could you put it on your bathroom mirror, desk at work, computer screensaver or refrigerator? You choose the place; let it become engrained on your heart and watch God do the work. We will provide additional layers of scripture each month starting in February that reinforce this theme to build your spiritual muscles.

February Verse for the Month

Romans 8:14 “because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

Whose son or daughter do we want to be? What family would you want to be part of and represent to the rest of the world other than the Almighty God Himself? If you remember our verse for 2010; Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”, you can clearly see that by adding a layer of the Holy Spirit leading our steps, we have a much greater ability to “seek first the kingdom” than if the steps we’re taking are in our own strength.

We pray and hope that the desire of your heart is to be part of the Royal Family and enjoy the abundant blessings that God has in store for those who love Him.

March Verse for the Month

Philippians 4:13 (NKJ) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

We’re seeking His Kingdom first and being led by the Spirit and now we find strength in Jesus to do all things. If you have been with us since the beginning of the year you know we’re building a case for staying focused on God and including Him in every area of your life. Whether it a decision about your career, relationships, money, health or even those daily choices about what to wear, watch, read, buy or who to hang around with, we know that every choice and decision is better made with Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit, leading and strengthening us for God’s good purpose.

We continue to pray that you value God’s opinion for every choice you make, however big or small, as to give Him honor with your life is always the right choice.

April Verse for the Month

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Are there times when the weight of the world feels like its sitting on your shoulders, back and neck? Many of us experience that on a daily basis and Jesus knew it. His desire for our life is to bless us with peace, joy and rest. The world leads us to believe that we should seek to be happy, however, happy is a feeling that is dependent on circumstances surrounding us that we don’t always have control over. Peace, joy and rest come from the inside as provided by a personal relationship with our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This is unshakable regardless of what is going on around you, it’s what you see when a Christian friend exhibits joy and peace in the midst of a trial.

Jesus continues in verse 29-30 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” It’s your choice, carry it all yourself or let our Savior do it, we pray you choose wisely!

May Verse for the Month

Philippians 3:13-14 “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Do you have something in your past that you regret? Most of us do, and when we try to move forward with our lives it hinders us sometimes. For many, it can keep us from realizing the power available to us. The Apostle Paul is sharing with us the focus to stay in the present. The enemy wants to continue to influence and distract us by continuing to remind us of our past failures and issues.

If God, through His son Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, has called us “heavenward” then we must embrace that mindset, “forgetting what is behind” and “press on” toward “the prize”. What is the prize? Throughout our journey, as Christians, there are many along the way, however, we all end at the same destination; Heaven with our Lord and Savior!

June Verse for the Month

John 20:30-31 “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

Imagine that almost 2000 years ago the Apostle John wrote this account of Jesus life specifically for you to believe that Jesus is the Son of God!

John’s desire was for us to contemplate the significance of the miracles Jesus did. It isn’t possible to carefully consider what occurred, with the historical data available, and not come to a conclusion. The more you study and reflect on it, the more reality sets in – Jesus was exactly who he said he was…The Christ, the Messiah, the living Son of God. This was written so YOU would believe and have life, abundantly and eternally.

We encourage you to read the Gospel of John, one chapter per day for the month of June and let us know what conclusion you come to. We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

July Verse for the Month

Psalm 119:17-18 “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.”

Did you know that there are over 700,000 grains of sand in 1 cup? Do you know that God cares so much that His thoughts for us are a number that’s multiplied beyond our ability to count with the width, depth and length of all the sand across this earth?

It is comforting to know that while we may forget a birthday or special event for someone close, God is always thinking of us, attentive to our needs and waiting patiently for our attention. While it is a thoughtful exercise to consider how great God’s love is for us, we can more easily grasp this love by looking at the Cross and realize the sacrifice our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ made by dying for our sin. It is with this understanding and how we respond that our lives can glorify God and show our love for Him. Simply put, God is always there for us, it’s only a question of whether we’re there with Him.

August Verse for the Month

Psalm 84:10 “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”

Have you been spending time, resting and growing in the house of the Lord? Every day we choose where we go, what we do, who we speak with and opportunities abound to do God’s will or our own. The reason the psalmist believes that one day in God’s court would be better than a thousand elsewhere is that he has experienced God’s goodness. He has tasted and seen that the Lord is good.

If we are not ready to go to the house of the Lord, we can take a step to go to the Lord of the house, our Savior Jesus Christ. He will give us the peace, rest and joy every heart longs for. It just takes a moment, to make that choice, to step in His direction and your life will forever be changed for the better. Jesus has been waiting patiently; with arms wide open, to receive and love you today and for all eternity. It’s with that love we can have “better days”.

September Verse for the Month

Proverbs 12:18 “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

The words that come out of your mouth can be like a bullet fired from a gun. Once you pull the trigger, you can’t get them back. A wise man, in my early years of parenting, told me never call your children what you don’t want them to be, that was wise counsel! Are the words that come out of your mouth ones that build others up, encouraging them, correcting and directing them gently with love?

Whether it’s your children, parents, friends, co-workers, employees, someone serving or doing business with you it doesn’t matter. If you’re reckless with your words, leaving those in your path wounded and emotionally (and spiritually) “pierced”, reconsider now how you can make a difference in someone else’s life (and yours) with words of wisdom. What are those? The Bible says they are gracious, lovely, kind, edifying, truthful, calm and providing hope to name a few. Try it this month and let us know the results you get.

October Verse for the Month

Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Many of us claim to love God, but when circumstances don’t go our way we boldly question whether God really loves us. We are called to walk by faith, therefore, is it fair to question God’s love when we haven’t stood faithfully through whatever the circumstance is?

We, as Christians, find comfort in knowing that God loved us so much He allowed His Son Jesus to die for our sin. Yes, your sin, and mine too. It’s in this promise that we can find peace and rest. Just as in mathematics, two negatives make a positive, so can “all things work together for good” if you make your love for God a priority and living in a manner that His purpose and will for your life is realized. That is putting faith in action and enjoying His perfect and pleasing will.

November Verse for the Month

Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

It is the beginning of time; God has appeared on the scene and created the heavens and the earth, what happened next? Have you ever noticed in this second verse of Genesis we see the first appearance of the Holy Spirit?

For many of us, grasping the concept of creator God is doable. Some take that next step of faith and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We challenge you today to see that the Holy Spirit is every bit as much God as the Father and Son. How important was it to God for us to know this? He didn’t wait but one verse to introduce us to this aspect of His character. So important is the Holy Spirit, we challenge you to know Him so well that you call Him your best friend. Yes, only a best friend would provide Holy counsel, teach, comfort, encourage, convict, sanctify and guide us. He also is the one who testifies of and glorifies Christ and most of all provides us with the spiritual power to overcome sin and live an abundant life today. Best friend indeed!
